Entrepreneurial Spirit Unleashed: Inside the Department of Management and Enterprise

Introduction

In the heart of Munster Technological University (MTU), the Department of Management and Enterprise stands as a cornerstone of innovation, entrepreneurship, and enterprise. Nestled within the School of Business and extending its reach across the Faculty of Business and Humanities, the Department is a vibrant hub for scholarly, teaching, and research activities. Its mission is to inspire and equip the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators, fostering a culture of excellence that permeates throughout the university and beyond.

Curriculum and Pedagogical Approach

Leading in academic quality, the Department designs, develops, and delivers a wide and comprehensive range of modules focused on Entrepreneurship, Enterprise, and Innovation. These modules are developed through a collaborative process that integrates the latest research with practical industry requirements, ensuring the curriculum is relevant, rigorous, and reflective of current and future market needs. Authentic assessment methods are employed to not only evaluate students’ grasp of theoretical knowledge but also to hone their practical skills, critical thinking, and ability to innovate in real-time. This pedagogical approach is based on the idea that education should directly reflect the complex and dynamic nature of the business world, equipping students with the skills to confidently and creatively navigate and lead in their future careers. MTU is a recipient of the Disciplinary Excellence in Learning, Teaching, and Assessment (DELTA) Award, which was presented for our demonstration of excellence in Entrepreneurship Education.

PhD Research and Academic Excellence

Two faculty members in the Department are completing PhD research that enhances entrepreneurship and its education. This focus on research shows the Department’s commitment to deepening knowledge in these fields. Their efforts will bring new ideas and approaches to our courses, improving the teaching, learning, and assessment experience for students. Through these concerted efforts in curriculum development and academic research, the Department of Management and Enterprise at MTU is not just teaching entrepreneurship; it is living it, fostering an environment where innovative ideas and entrepreneurial spirits thrive.

Hincks Centre for Entrepreneurship Excellence

The Hincks Centre for Entrepreneurship Excellence, with a dedicated team of experts, embarks on a mission to champion entrepreneurship in all its forms. Through a rich portfolio of research, education, and training initiatives, the Hincks Centre not only contributes to the academic enrichment of MTU students but also extends its impact to industry and policy-making spheres. Self-funded through a diverse array of EU and national projects, the Centre exemplifies a successful model of sustainability in academia. Its award-winning efforts are a testament to its commitment to fostering entrepreneurship, as further evidenced by its expansive website (https://hincks.mtu.ie/), which serves as a repository of knowledge and an invitation for collaboration.

V-LINC Research Centre

Parallel to the Hincks Centre’s focus on entrepreneurship, the V-LINC Research Centre carves its niche within the competitive and clustering landscape. At the cutting edge of economic research, V-LINC utilizes specialized software to map, analyze, and evaluate the intricate web of relationships within clusters, ecosystems, and value chains. This innovative approach aids in enhancing regional and national competitiveness, making V-LINC a pivotal player in economic development strategies. The Centre’s self-sufficiency mirrors that of the Hincks Centre, with funding sourced from EU and national projects. Collaboration is at the heart of V-LINC’s ethos, bringing together academia, industry, and policymakers to forge impactful synergies. Strategic Integration and Support

The Department of Management and Enterprise’s initiatives correlate closely with MTU’s broader educational, research, and industry engagement agenda. Located at the Bishopstown Campus, the Department is a critical pillar supporting the School of Business’s contribution to MTU’s vision. Collaboration with The Rubicon Centre and the Innovation & Enterprise office illustrates the Department’s commitment to practical entrepreneurship education. These partnerships provide a rich ecosystem for students, offering them opportunities to engage with real-world enterprise activities, competitions, and programmes. In alignment with MTU’s Strategic Plan (2022-2027), the Department actively contributes to the university’s research, innovation, and entrepreneurship strategy. This commitment is further amplified by its commitment to embedding the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through PRME (Principles for Responsible Management Education), fostering an integrated, multidisciplinary culture that champions innovation and entrepreneurship. The Department prides itself on excellence in teaching, learning, and assessment practices, cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset that permeates from staff to students. This culture is not merely about fostering business creation but about instilling a broad-based entrepreneurial spirit that encourages innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills applicable in a wide range of contexts. The Department actively supports MTU’s Community of Practice for Entrepreneurship Educators & Researchers (CPEER), which allows us to share best practices and innovative experiences in teaching and learning with our learners.
